PICKUP TRUCK SAFETY

The Humane Society estimates that approximately 100,000 dogs are killed each year in accidents involving pickup trucks.

Consider the following situations:

  • If a dog is riding in the bed of a pickup truck (unrestrained) and that truck swerves to avoid an object, hits a pothole, or just stops fast, the dog can go flying out of the truck bed. The fall itself may not necessarily kill or injure the dog, but another car may. A dog falling out of the bed of the pickup also poses a risk to other drivers who will have to swerve to avoid hitting it.
  • Flying debris can injure a dog that is left exposed. For example, gravel and dust from the road may be kicked up by the vehicle, entering the dog’s eyes, ears, or nose.
  • An excited dog that happens to see a squirrel, bird, or other animal may jump out to chase it.

While you might think that leashing your dog or tying it to the bed of the truck may prevent any of the above instances, doing so may pose an even greater risk. Dogs tied down may attempt to jump out, thereby causing themselves to be dragged or even strangled by their own leash.

If you must travel with your dog in the bed of a pickup truck, please keep him or her in a sturdy travel kennel or crate. Such a kennel should be fastened securely to the truck bed. Kennels and crates may be purchased at any pet store (i.e. PetSmart, PetCo, and even Walmart). Remember, however, that even a secure dog is still exposed to the elements. Be sure to limit the amount of exposure to extreme heat or cold.

Testimonial

Care Animal Hospital is wonderful and this is by far the best place to take your pet.  I have been to several other veterinary hospitals and nothing compares to the friendliness of the staff and their compassion for taking care of animals.  The staff is extremely knowledgeable on pet healthcare.  The doctors are excellent and willing to answer all of your questions.  After visiting care, I wouldn’t take my pets anywhere else.
